World Environment Day

       The evolution of human beings has caused an imbalance in nature. Hence, to emphasize on the role of human beings in preserving environment - World Environment Day is being on celebrated on 5th June every year, starting from 1974. A theme based on the pressing environmental issue is given every year. This year's theme for World Environment Day is BIODIVERSITY.

       Nature has provided the favourable environment for the survival of living things. Due to exploitation by the human beings, the very survival of other species has become extinct. But, the recent events from bushfire in Brazil, Australia and United States of America, the COVID-19 pandemic and the locust infestations across Asia and Africa has once again demonstrated the interdependence of human and Nature. Hence, to emphasise on the role of human beings in preserving nature, World Environment Day has been celebrated on 5th June, 2020 amid COVID-19, under the guidance of Correspondent and Principal of Adhiparasakthi Dental College and Hospital. Precautions were taken to ensure social distancing among the patients and staff members.  

       The following activities were conducted in Adhiparasakthi Dental College and Hospital during Environment Week Celebrations from 1st June, 2020 to 5th June, 2020 by involving staff members at college and students through online mode of communication. The five-day celebrations commenced with the announcement of various competitions under the theme “BIODIVERSITY” and concluded with World Environment Day on 05.06.2020. Due to COVID-19, the students and staff members were informed about Environment Week activities through electronic communication methods like Email and WhatsApp.

Day 1: 01.06.2020

Announcement of various competitions on the theme – “BIODIVERSITY”

       As per guidance by Correspondent and Principal, various competitions were conducted for UG students, Interns and PG students. Interested teaching and non-teaching staff members were also encouraged to participate in the competitions. A student or faculty were allowed to participate in more than one category. The competitions include:

  • Poem (English and Tamil)
  • Essay (English and Tamil)
  • Painting / Pencil sketch
  • Video (English and Tamil)

       The students and staff members were announced about the competitions through WhatsApp groups and their respective in-charges. The last date for submission was 03.06.2020. All the entries were submitted to iqac.apdch@gmail.com.

 

Day 2: 02.06.2020

WEBINAR - Biodiversity In Practice: What Environmental Professionals Are Doing to Enhance their Environment

       In order to emphasize on preserving biodiversity around us, the faculty members of Adhiparasakthi Dental College and Hospital were encouraged to register for a Webinar titled Biodiversity In Practice: What Environmental Professionals Are Doing to Enhance their Environment.  Thirty four faculty members have registered for this webinar. On 2nd June, 2020, a reminder was given to all the registered participants about the webinar. The available faculty members attended the webinar at lecture hall – 3 with social distancing.

       The webinar session took place between 2.30pm to 3.30pm. This webinar focussed on three organisations - Anglian Water, Arup and Canary Wharf Group. This webinar explained about what actions the three organisations have taken to enhance biodiversity in their respective environment. This was followed by panel discussion which raised questions on what can be done to improve biodiversity. The whole session was chaired by the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM).

DAY 3: 03.06.2020

WORLD BICYCLE DAY

       As a part of Environment Week celebrations, World Bicycle Day was celebrated on 03.06.2020. A video was created which described the evolution of bicycle, the advantages of using bicycles. The video also gave an insight into the cycling routine in and around the college campus. The available faculty members were educated about the advantages of bicycle in improving health, economy and environment. They were encouraged to use bicycles for commuting in and around the college campus.

  

 

DAY 4: 04.06.2020

Registration for United Nations ACTNOW campaign

       All the students and staff members in the college were encouraged to participate in the United Nations ActNow campaign so as to create an awareness about environment friendly lifestyle. The United Nations Organization has started ActNow campaign as a global call to individual action on climate change. This campaign is an online and social media campaign. It is one of the most important efforts to raise awareness, ambition, and action for climate change and accelerate implementation of the Paris Agreement. ActNow will educate and encourage individual actions, mainly by adjusting consumption patterns.

       On 4th June, 2020, the competition entries submitted online till 03.06.2020 were organized and categorised.  A total of 63 entries were submitted online for the Environment Week competitions. This included 17 essays, 17 poems, 25 paintings/pencil sketches and 4 videos. The entries were categorised based on the category and language into

  • Poem (English and Tamil)
  • Essay (English and Tamil)
  • Painting / Pencil sketch
  • Videos

 

DAY 5: 05.06.2020

WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY

       The Environment Day celebrations took place at Administative block of Adhiparasakthi Dental College and Hospital. The program commenced with welcoming correspondent with a snake plant (Sansevieria trifasciata). After the introductory speech about importance of biodiversity by Principal, plant saplings were distributed to patients and teaching as well as non-teaching staff members by Correspondent and Principal. Following this, an oath was taken by the faculty members to follow an environment friendly lifestyle.

       In the college campus, saplings were planted by Correspondent, Principal and HODs of all departments. At Mini Auditorium in the administrative block, two videos were launched by Correspondent to celebrate “World Bicycle Day” and “World Environment Day”. A video displaying the competition entries was also featured in front of Correspondent, Principal and other faculty members. Finally, the program ended with Correspondent and Principal evaluating the competition entries and the best entry in each category was selected. The Environment Week celebrations were planned with an initiative to encourage eco-friendly measures with minimal usage of paper and other resources. All the communication was made using electronic gadgets.
